First nations


First Nations in British Columbia are in an unprecedented time of growth, development and opportunity in every area – economic, educational, social, cultural and environmental. At the same time there are persistent historical issues and ongoing challenges that need to be addressed. The stakes could not be higher and the issues more complex. First Nations in British Columbia represent more than 30% of all First Nations communities in Canada. Sixty-five are in treaty negotiations and 14 are Participating First Nations in the process of gaining control over their own educational system. First Nations have unprecedented resource and economic development opportunities but there is a need to make sure that the agreements that are negotiated will benefit their communities in terms of revenue sharing, financial arrangements and jobs. There is also a need to balance these opportunities with measures that protect the land, sea and air. First Nations around BC know that what is done now will have an impact for generations to come. Public Sector
